Step One
Vacuum & Blow Out
Always start dry. Before touching any chemical, vacuum and blow out the entire interior — seats, carpet, floor mats, door pockets, dash crevices, cup holders. Getting the loose debris out first means you’re not pushing dirt into your cleaning products later.
Blow out first, then vacuum
Blow out crevices first (dash vents, seat seams, console gaps), then vacuum. Blowing out first pushes trapped debris onto the carpet where the vacuum can get it. If you vacuum first, you’ll need to run it again anyway.

Step Two
All-Purpose Cleaner

Dilution matters

Step Three
Carpet & Upholstery
Carpet and fabric seats hold more contamination than any other interior surface — dirt, stains, pet hair, food. Enzyme-based cleaners are the most effective for organic stains. Agitate with the right tool, allow dwell time, then extract or blot. Never scrub dry carpet with APC — it needs moisture and agitation to release.

Step Four
Leather Care
Leather care is two steps: clean first, then condition. Conditioning dirty leather drives contamination deeper into the grain. And different leather types — standard pigmented, semi-aniline, full aniline — require different products. Know what you’re working on before you start.
Never skip the cleaning step
Conditioner applied over dirty leather seals contamination into the grain. This is the step most people skip — and why their leather gets progressively darker over time. Clean first, let it fully dry, then condition. Full stop.

Step Five
Dashboard & Trim
After cleaning with APC, dash and trim surfaces need a dedicated protectant. Good protection prevents UV fading, cracking, and the dusty buildup that makes interiors look neglected. Matte-finish products are the professional standard — the high-gloss “armor-all” look belongs in the past.

Step Six
Glass & Windows
Interior glass is the hardest surface to clean in the entire detail. You’re working from one side, at odd angles, against a filmy buildup of outgassed plasticizers from the dashboard. Streak-free results require the right cleaner, the right towel process, and the right tool to reach the bottom of the windshield.
Two microfibers, always
Use one microfiber damp with glass cleaner for the cleaning pass, and a second dry glass towel to buff streak-free. One towel redistributes the product you just removed. The Rag Company glass towels in this section are built for exactly this process.

Step Seven
Odor Elimination
Odor elimination is the last step — not the first. If you use a bomb or spray before cleaning, you’re masking, not eliminating. Clean the source first. Then treat the air and residual odors with the right product for the job.
Find the source first
Spraying an odor eliminator into a car with moldy carpet does nothing. Lift floor mats. Check under seats for wet spots. Inspect carpet for staining. Eliminate the source with enzyme cleaner (Step 3), then treat residual odor. A car that still smells after a full detail has an untreated source somewhere.

Common Questions
Top to bottom, dry to wet. Blow out and vacuum the whole interior first. Then work surfaces from the top down with APC (headliner, dash, door panels, carpet). Clean leather and fabric separately after. Glass and odor elimination come last. Never apply a protectant before cleaning — you’ll seal contamination in place.
For cleaning, a diluted APC or dedicated leather cleaner handles both. Where it matters is the final step: leather needs conditioner to replace moisture. Vinyl doesn’t absorb conditioner the same way — it benefits more from a dedicated protectant like Gtechniq C6. If you’re unsure what your seats are made of, check the owner’s manual or look for a tag under the seat cushion.
Aniline leather is dyed with transparent dyes all the way through and has no protective surface coating — it’s the softest, most natural leather you can buy, and also the most absorbent and delicate. Standard (pigmented) leather has a surface coating that makes it more durable and stain-resistant. Most factory leather is pigmented. Aniline is common in premium European vehicles. Use Geist Aniline Cream on aniline leather — standard conditioners can darken or stain it permanently.
There’s an untreated source. Check under carpet for moisture or mold (lift the mat, press on the carpet). Look under seats for old food, pet accidents, or spills that soaked through. The HVAC system is also a common odor source — musty smell when you run the AC is usually mold in the evaporator. The BIO BOMB Oxygenator deployed in a sealed cabin with the HVAC running will treat the system along with the rest of the interior.
That film is outgassed plasticizers from the dashboard — the same chemical that creates “new car smell.” It deposits onto the glass over time. Use Gtechniq G6 with two dedicated glass microfibers: one damp for the cleaning pass, one dry for the buff. G6’s anti-static formula reduces how quickly the film returns. The Stoner reach tool handles the bottom-of-windshield problem that makes interior glass so frustrating.
A well-diluted APC like P&S Xpress is fine for light cleaning on pigmented leather. Avoid concentrated or solvent-heavy APCs directly on leather — they dry it out fast. For any serious leather cleaning, use a dedicated leather cleaner like Geist Rapid that’s pH-balanced for hides. Always condition after cleaning leather with anything more aggressive than a light wipe.
