Wheel and Tire Cleaning Questions
Start by rinsing wheels thoroughly to remove loose brake dust and grit. Apply a pH-safe wheel cleaner and let it dwell for 30 to 60 seconds. Use a soft wheel brush for the face, a long barrel brush for the inner barrel and spokes, and a lug nut brush for tight recesses. Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately to prevent water spots. Applying a ceramic wheel coating or wheel sealant makes future cleanings significantly easier.
Iron fallout is the accumulation of tiny metallic particles — primarily brake dust — that embed into wheel surfaces and surrounding paint over time. When brakes heat up and the rotor and pad wear, microscopic iron particles are released and bond to nearby surfaces at high speed. If left untreated, they can cause rust spots and permanent surface damage. An iron fallout remover chemically dissolves these particles safely.
A diluted all-purpose cleaner can be effective for general wheel cleaning on moderately soiled wheels. However, for heavily contaminated wheels with significant brake dust buildup, a dedicated wheel cleaner formulated to dissolve iron particles will produce better results with less scrubbing. Avoid strong alkaline cleaners on bare aluminum, polished, or chrome wheels as they can cause etching and discoloration.
Apply tire dressing with a dedicated foam tire applicator, working it evenly into the sidewall in a circular motion. Apply sparingly — a thin, even coat looks better and lasts longer than an overapplied heavy coat that will sling onto your paint when driving. Allow the dressing to fully absorb before moving the vehicle. If any dressing contacts your paint, wipe it off immediately with a clean microfiber towel.
Wheels should be cleaned at every wash since brake dust accumulates quickly and becomes more difficult to remove the longer it sits. If you track your vehicle or drive in heavy traffic, you may need to clean more frequently. Applying a wheel sealant or ceramic coating dramatically reduces how much contaminant sticks to the surface, making every future cleaning faster and easier.
