Standard overhead shop lighting casts diffuse, multi-directional light that makes it very difficult to see surface imperfections like swirl marks, buffer trails, holograms, and micro-scratches. A dedicated detailing inspection light produces a focused, high-intensity beam that reveals these defects by creating contrast across the surface. Without proper lighting, you can easily miss defects during paint correction and end up with a finish that looks poor in natural sunlight.

A spot light produces a concentrated beam ideal for inspecting small areas, evaluating correction progress, and checking for remaining defects up close. A panel light produces a wide, even beam that illuminates an entire panel at once, making it easier to see swirl patterns across large surfaces and evaluate the overall finish quality before delivering a vehicle to a customer.

Daylight-balanced lights in the 5,000K to 6,500K range are ideal for detailing inspections because they most closely replicate natural sunlight, which is the harshest light for revealing paint defects. Lights that are too warm can hide certain types of scratches, while very cool blue-tinted lights can make surfaces appear to have more defects than they actually have.

Hold the light at a low angle of 15 to 30 degrees to the painted surface and move it slowly across the panel. Holograms, buffer trails, and swirl marks will appear as distinct patterns in the light reflection. Work in a darkened environment for the most accurate assessment. Compare the reflection to the light source — if lines or dots appear distorted or wavy in the reflection, surface defects are still present.
