What is paint correction?
Paint correction is the process of removing small layers of clear coat to reveal a perfectly flat surface. When light hits scratched or swirled paint, it refracts in different directions — that's what makes swirls visible. A flat, polished surface reflects light at a consistent angle and produces the deep, wet shine you're looking for. Paint correction does not fill defects. It removes them by leveling the clear coat around them.
The fingernail test: run your fingernail across a scratch. If it catches, the scratch is through the clear coat and cannot be polished out — it needs paint. If it doesn't catch, it's within the clear coat and can be corrected.
Swirl Marks
Thousands of fine scratches from improper washing, dry wiping, or automated car washes. Look circular under light.
CorrectableLight Scratches
Isolated scratches within the clear coat from keys, brushes, or contact. Correctable if shallow — fingernail test is the check.
CorrectableHolograms
Unfinished polishing trails left after compounding. The paint was cut but never properly refined down to a true finish.

Not CorrectableMost paint correction is two machine steps — a cut to remove defects, and a polish to refine the finish. But it always starts with clean, decontaminated paint.
Paint correction on contaminated paint is a disaster. Before you touch a pad, the car needs to be fully washed, iron decontaminated, and clayed. Machine selection is your first variable on the scale from least aggressive to most aggressive. A long-throw dual-action (DA) polisher is the recommended choice for nearly every job — it's fast, produces excellent correction, and is significantly safer than a rotary on modern OEM clear coats. The DA's two-motion design (rotation + oscillation) reduces heat buildup and prevents the machine from burning paint on edges and contours. The "throw" is how far the backing plate orbits outside center — a 12mm or 15mm long-throw machine removes defects faster than a standard 5–8mm DA.
Machine Types — Least to Most Aggressive
Dual Action (DA) / Long Throw DA — Two movements: rotation + oscillation. Free-spindle slows down on edges. Safest for OEM paint and newer operators. Recommended for most correction work.
Force Rotation DA — Same orbit as a DA but gear-driven so it never bogs down under pressure. More aggressive than a free-spindle DA, useful on flat horizontal panels where you want consistent rotation.
Rotary — One motion only: pure rotation. Concentrates all energy in one spot. Most aggressive and fastest at removing clear coat. Use on heavily damaged paint, single-stage, or gel coat — with caution and experience.
Cutting Pads
Pad selection is your second variable. Different manufacturers use different color coding, so colors mean nothing without knowing the brand — focus on the material instead. Microfiber cuts most aggressively while finishing down better than wool. Foam cut pads are a great mid-range option for moderate defects. Wool is the most aggressive and is typically paired with heavy defects or single-stage paint. For most two-stage correction jobs, a microfiber cutting pad paired with a compound is the best starting point.
Cutting Compound
Compounds are aggressive liquid abrasives designed to remove significant clear coat quickly. They handle deep scratches, heavy swirls, water spot etching, oxidation, and the marks left by wet sanding. Most modern compounds use diminishing abrasives — they start coarser and break down into finer particles as you work, naturally improving the finish as you go. When you compound a panel, you will see haze and fine scratches in the finish under light. That is normal and expected — the finishing step removes them.
Finishing Pads
After compounding, switch to a finishing pad to refine the surface and remove the haze and micro-marring left behind. Finishing pads are softer, more tightly constructed, and designed to put the finest possible scratches into the clear coat — scratches too small to see under any light. Paired with a finishing polish, they bring out the true gloss of the paint and prepare the surface for any ceramic coating or sealant you apply.
Finishing Polish
Finishing polish is a fine liquid abrasive that refinishes the clear coat after compounding and removes any remaining haze. Where compound removes material quickly, finishing polish levels and polishes it to a true high-gloss. Think of compounding as aggressive sanding and finishing as the final, fine-grit buff — both are needed for full paint correction. A finishing polish on a soft foam pad is also your choice for light maintenance correction where the defects are mild enough that you don't need to compound at all.
IPA Panel Wipe
Compounds and polishes contain oils that reduce dusting and improve workability — and those same oils temporarily fill and mask fine scratches, giving you a false reading of the actual correction. Before you assess the final result under a light, wipe every panel with an IPA-based panel prep spray to remove all polish residue. What you see after that wipe is exactly what the customer gets. It is also mandatory before applying any ceramic coating or sealant — polish oils prevent coatings from bonding to the clear coat properly and will dramatically reduce durability if left in place.
Paint Thickness Gauge
A paint thickness gauge tells you how much clear coat is on a panel before you start cutting. Readings vary across the same car — repainted panels, panels that have been polished many times, or factory panels with unusually thin clear can all read differently. Knowing the thickness before you correct protects you from polishing through, and lets you read which panels have been repainted. For professional detailers, this tool pays for itself quickly.
