Detailing Prep Questions
Surface prep ensures the coating or film bonds to clean, contamination-free paint. Any dirt, oils, iron particles, or wax residue left on the paint will prevent proper adhesion, leading to poor performance, hazing, and premature failure. A properly prepped surface is the foundation of any long-lasting paint protection.
Iron fallout remover is a chemical that reacts with and dissolves embedded iron particles — primarily brake dust — that bond to painted surfaces, wheels, and glass over time. It typically turns purple or red on contact with iron contamination, showing you where it's working. Use it as part of your decontamination process before clay barring and before any coating or polish application.
Both remove bonded surface contaminants that washing alone cannot remove, but they differ in form. A clay bar is a traditional block of detailing clay that must be kneaded and used with a lubrication spray. A clay mitt fits over your hand for faster coverage of large panels. Clay mitts are generally more durable and faster for full-vehicle decontamination, while clay bars offer more precision for smaller areas.
An IPA (isopropyl alcohol) wipe-down is the final step before applying a coating, sealant, or wax. It removes any remaining oils, polish residue, and water spots that could compromise bonding. A 50/50 IPA and distilled water solution applied with a clean microfiber towel is the standard method, leaving the surface completely clean and ready for product application.
Full decontamination — including iron removal and clay bar treatment — is not needed at every wash. It is typically done two to four times per year, or whenever you feel surface roughness during washing. On coated vehicles, proper maintenance washing with a ceramic-safe shampoo is usually sufficient for routine care.
